Organic Baby Clothes! The problems with cotton.

Unfortunately, nearly all cotton production is hugely (and increasingly) reliant on pesticides derived from petrochemicals. This causes problems for the environment, the farmers who grow the crop and it's not that great for the people who wear it.

The farmer - Pests build up resistance to chemicals, farmer borrows money to buy more chemicals than before, farmer gets less profit from crop, repeat until farmer is destitute. Many chemicals used in cotton farming are acutely toxic. At least three of them are in the "dirty dozen" - so dangerous that 120 countries agreed at a UNEP conference in 2001 to ban them. So far this hasn't happened. The World Trade Organisation estimates 20,000 deaths and three million chronic health problems each year are the result of the use of agricultural pesticides in developing countries.
The Environment - Heavy pesticide use reduces biodiversity, disrupts ecosystems, and contaminates water supplies. Worse still, pests exposed to synthetic pesticides build up a resistance to them. So each year, farmers have to buy and use more pesticides to grow the same amount of cotton - increasing the annual damage to the environment.
Babies Skin - A babies skin is much thinner and more absorbent than ours. Organic cotton is less likely to trigger allergies through the absence of harmful chemicals and increased breathablity of organic cotton. That means that organic cotton baby clothes are really kind to eczema. Organic cotton feels softer, because the cotton fibres are left intact and not broken down by the chemicals

Organic cotton is grown "Working with, not against," nature. Grown without pesticides and spun without chemicals, organic cotton farmers rely on organic fertilizers, manual crop rotation and integrated pest management. Organic cotton fields are naturally fertilized, insects are used to naturally control crops, and weeds are removed with hoes, as well as manually. Farms earn the organic label by using soil that has been free of synthetic pesticides for at least three consecutive years. Beneficial insects, natural cattle manure, chilli, garlic, and alfalfa are some of the ingredients used in organic farming.

Fair Trade! What does it really mean?

When you go to your local supermarket and see a shirt for £4.00, you think, wow that's cheap how do they do it for that price? The fact is someone is paying the price and it's not you!

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.

	The FAIRTRADE Mark is an independent consumer label which appears on UK products as a guarantee that they have been certified against internationally agreed Fairtrade standards. The Mark indicates that the product has been certified to give a better deal to the producers involved - it does not act as an endorsement of an entire company's business practices.
	WFTO is the World Fair Trade Organization, the global network of Fair Trade Organizations. WFTO's mission is to enable producers to improve their livelihoods and communities through Fair Trade. WFTO will be the global network and advocate for Fair Trade, ensuring producer voices are heard.

In short it's all about ensuring that the people involved in making the things we buy are treated in a way that we would expect us and our children to be. We are the consumers and we have the power to change things, the choice to do so is yours.
