Fairtrade Fortnight
22nd February - 7th March 2021
Fairtrade is a great way to improve the quality of life of the farmers and growers that produce the things we love. Fairtrade is about giving fair prices, good working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for workers in the developing world.
Making Trade Fair
There are over 1.66 Million farmers and workers across the Fairtrade system, how are their lives affected by Fairtrade?
Fair Price: Farmers and workers receive a fair price for their produce or labour which helps combat poverty, strengthen their position and take more control over their lives.
Fairtrade Premium: On top of the fair price farmers and workers receive an extra sum of money to invest in improving the quality of their lives and those of the community. As an example, workers on Fairtrade certified plantations invested 32% of their Fairtrade premium into education service (19%) and housing improvements (13%)
Fair Standards: Fairtrade set certain standards that must be adhered by. They are a holistic blend of social, economic and environmental criteria. At the core for farmers this means protection of their rights and the environment.
The Fairtrade foundation is an independent, non-profit organisation that licenses the use of the FAIRTRADE mark on products in the UK that meet the internationally agreed fairtrade standards.
Climate Change Effects on Farmers and Workers
This year the Fairtrade Foundation aim to highlight the continued effects climate change has on farmers, workers and the communities Fairtrade works with. From weather patterns changing and fluctuating production levels to the inability to respond to environmental shocks the changing climate has a disproportionate impact on those working in developing countries.
