PlanToys Wooden Geo Sorting Bucket Shape Sorter 12m+

The PlanToys Geo Sorting Bucket is a wooden shape sorter and posting toy for babies and toddlers from 12 months, with a rounded PlanWood bucket, wooden lid and three colourful solid wood geometric blocks: a blue cylinder, yellow triangle and red square. Children can grasp, turn and match each 3D shape to the correct opening, then lift the lid to find the pieces again and start all over.

That simple drop-and-find action introduces one of the really interesting stages of early development: object permanence, the understanding that something still exists even when it has disappeared from view. Post a shape through the lid, watch it vanish into the bucket, then open the top and there it is again. PlanToys specifically designed the Geo Sorting Bucket to support this concept, as well as cause and effect, shape recognition, spatial awareness and problem solving.

There is plenty happening physically too. Babies and toddlers need to grasp the wooden blocks, rotate them, work out which opening matches and adjust their hand position until the shape drops through. This supports fine motor control, hand-eye coordination, visual discrimination and early spatial thinking, with lots of trial and error built naturally into the play.

The three clear geometric shapes also give you simple language to bring into play: round, square, triangle, blue, yellow and red, as well as ideas such as in, out, gone, found and again. As children become more confident, they can begin matching more deliberately rather than simply experimenting with each opening.

The lid opens fully so children can retrieve the shapes themselves, making the repetition part of the play rather than something an adult has to reset each time. A wooden carry handle makes the bucket easy to move around too, and all three blocks store inside when play is finished. PlanToys highlights independent, self-directed learning as another part of the design.

It would make a lovely first birthday gift, particularly for a child beginning to enjoy posting, filling and emptying, shape sorting and finding hidden objects. The mix of materials is lovely here too. The rounded bucket is made from PlanWood, PlanToys’ material made using surplus sawdust from their own rubberwood toy production, while the lid and sorting pieces are made from solid rubberwood. It gives the toy a nice contrast between the smooth wooden pieces and the slightly speckled PlanWood bucket, while making use of more of the original material rather than wasting it.

Made sustainably in Thailand from reclaimed rubberwood. PlanToys kiln-dries its rubberwood rather than using chemical wood-preservation treatments, and uses organic pigments, water-based dyes and no-added-formaldehyde adhesives in its toy production.
