PlanToys Wooden Mosaic Set (45 Pieces) with Sorting Tray

The PlanToys Mosaic is a 45-piece wooden geometric shape set with a round four-section sorting and storage tray, for creating pictures, mosaics, mandalas, flat lays, patterns and all kinds of open-ended designs. Colourful triangles, squares, rectangles, circles, semicircles and curved shapes can be arranged and rearranged into animals, people, houses, vehicles, flowers, abstract pictures and whatever else children decide to make.

There are nine wooden pieces in each of five colours: red, blue, green, yellow and orange. Children can sort them by colour, shape or size, copy one of the picture ideas included, create repeating sequences and symmetrical designs, or simply start arranging the pieces and see where the play goes.

The circular sorting tray is an important part of the set and can be used independently too. Its four divided sections are ideal for sorting and organising the Mosaic pieces, colour matching, counting and categorising, or filling with other loose parts, natural treasures and play materials. It also works really well for setting up an invitation to play, and all 45 Mosaic pieces store neatly inside afterwards.

This is a brilliant set for open-ended play and loose parts play. Start in the centre and build outwards to make a wooden mandala, create a seasonal flat lay, explore repeating patterns or combine the shapes with figures, wooden toys, leaves, flowers, conkers and other loose parts. The simple geometric pieces can become something completely different each time they are played with.

There is plenty of early maths within the play too. Children can explore shape, colour, size, pattern, symmetry, sequencing, position, rotation and spatial relationships. Turning pieces, working out how different shapes fit together and adapting a design through trial and error encourages logical thinking, problem solving, concentration, fine motor control and hand-eye coordination.

The PlanToys Mosaic also fits naturally into different approaches to learning through play. Use it for Montessori-inspired sorting, matching and pattern activities, a Reggio Emilia-inspired invitation to play, early maths and STEAM activities, home education, or simply leave the pieces available for independent, child-led creative play.

The smooth circular tray also shows off some of the thinking behind PlanToys' own manufacturing. Their curved plywood is made from layers of reclaimed rubberwood and bonded using PlanToys' own E-Zero, no-added-formaldehyde glue, developed in-house when they wanted a better alternative to the adhesives available at the time. PlanToys kiln-dries its reclaimed rubberwood rather than relying on chemical wood-preservation treatments, and uses water-based colours on its toys.
