Lanka Kade Sand & Water Playset | Sri Lankan Coconut Shell Outdoor Toys

Just like the coconut fruit itself, this unique Lanka Kade water playset is incredibly versatile. Handmade in Sri Lanka from discarded coconut shells and palm wood handles, each piece is beautifully unique, with its natural, raw finish left untouched. These fair trade wooden toys are made using the same traditional methods as real Sri Lankan Polkatu Handi. In fact, they look and feel just like the real thing, only slightly scaled down for little hands. This set includes:

  • one spoon – perfect for scooping, pouring, and water-based sensory play
  • two colander spoons (one with a single hole, one with three holes) – ideal for experimenting with the flow and texture of water, sand, or small treasures
  • one bowl – for collecting, mixing, and pouring during outdoor play
  • one colander bowl – great for watching water trickle through and exploring different textures

Whether in the sandpit, at the beach, or splashing in the paddling pool, these coconut shell utensils invite endless hands-on, Montessori-inspired play. Their authentic, durable design means they're not just for play - they can be used as real, scaled-down utensils too, perfect for scooping, pouring, or adding a natural, rustic touch to your home or play space. An absolute favourite here at Babipur, these coconut toys are all about connecting children to traditional skills around the world.

From pouring water to collecting shells and stirring up imaginary seaside soups, this beautiful set encourages creativity, sensory exploration, and a connection to Sri Lankan tradition.

Polkatu Handi - "Coconut Shell Spoons"

To Sri Lankans, the humble coconut is far more than just a tasty fruit. It finds its way into almost every meal, but its role in daily life goes well beyond the kitchen. The timber from its tall, graceful tree becomes furniture and flooring, its oil is massaged into hair to encourage growth, its tough fibres are woven into brooms, carpets, and ropes. And then there are the shells...

What are coconut shell spoons (Polkatu Handi) used for? Coconut shell spoons are the go-to utensil in kitchens across Sri Lanka, prized for their durability and natural heat resistance. For generations, these spoons have been handmade - sometimes by local artisans, sometimes in the family home. They’re ideal for cooking and serving rice, gravies, and hearty curries, and their simple, rustic design connects every meal to centuries of tradition.
