Peace and Me: Inspired by the Lives of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates

Created by writer Ali Winter and illustrator Mickaël El Fathi

What does peace mean to you?

Peace and Me is an illustrated non-fiction children’s book exploring the lives and work of twelve Nobel Peace Prize Laureates from around the world.

Children will meet well-known figures including Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, and Malala Yousafzai, alongside people whose stories may be less familiar. Beginning with Alfred Nobel and the origins of the prize, the book uses accessible biographical profiles to show the many different ways people have worked towards peace.

Each story is accompanied by a different thought beginning with “Peace is…”, helping children explore ideas such as supporting people in trouble, making sure everyone has a home, allowing unheard voices to be heard, and ensuring every child can go to school.

Ali Winter’s writing and Mickaël El Fathi’s illustrations work together throughout the book. Mickaël combines textured paper collage, dry pastel, pattern, and computer graphics to represent the life and work of each Laureate. Children can also look for the little girl in a yellow dress who appears within every illustration.

This is a fascinating book to read a person or a page at a time, leaving plenty of space for questions and conversations about history, fairness, human rights, and what peace might mean to each of us.

Amnesty International endorses Peace and Me for showing how standing up for other people can help make the world a better and more peaceful place.
