Erzi Pixelino Magnetic Wooden Mosaic & Pixel Art Set - 100 Pieces

The Erzi Pixelino is a magnetic wooden pixel art set with 100 colourful beechwood cubes in 10 colours, all packed into a compact magnetic tin. Arrange the little squares into pictures, patterns, letters, numbers and colourful mosaics, copy one of the included ideas or start with a blank space and make something completely your own.

Each 12mm wooden cube has a magnetic underside, so the pieces stay where you put them. Use Pixelino directly inside the tin it comes in, which makes it brilliant for travel, restaurants and taking out and about, or move the play onto any suitable magnetic surface. Erzi specifically designed the pieces to work on magnetic boards as well as the tin.

We especially love that this means Pixelino works beautifully on a fridge, magnetic play board or the Triclimb Biri. The Biri has a brushed stainless steel magnetic play surface, so children can take their Pixelino designs much bigger, combine the cubes with drawing and other magnetic toys or add little pixel details to a larger piece of play.

There is something very satisfying about building a picture one tiny square at a time. Make animals, flowers, buildings, faces, rainbows, geometric shapes or colour gradients, explore symmetry and repeating patterns, or use the cubes for counting and sorting by colour. Children can work from the included examples, recreate something they recognise or experiment with their own pixel-style designs.

It is a lovely activity for fine motor control, concentration and hand-eye coordination too. Picking up the small cubes, placing them precisely and deciding where the next colour should go asks for patience and careful movement, while the magnets stop an accidental knock from sending the whole creation skittering across the table. A small mercy for both child and adult.

As children get more confident, the play can become increasingly detailed. Simple colour blocks and patterns can develop into recognisable pictures, symmetrical designs, letters, numbers or more complicated mosaics. There is no single finished model, so the same 100 pieces can be rearranged endlessly.

The compact 13.5cm square tin keeps all 100 pieces together and becomes the play surface itself, making Pixelino particularly useful as a portable creative activity. The magnetic bases also help keep the pieces inside the tin during play rather than wandering off quite so easily.

Pixelino is made in Germany by Erzi from beech wood. Erzi has been making wooden educational and play materials in the Erzgebirge since 1991, with a strong focus on physical play, hands-on learning and durable wooden toys. The company states that the wood it uses comes from sustainably managed forests and is regularly quality checked.
