When is the next full moon?
The next full moon is the Sturgeon Moon, appearing on the 9th August 2025.
What is the Sturgeon Moon?
The Sturgeon Moon is the full moon that appears in August. It's named after the sturgeon fish traditionally caught in the Great Lakes of North America during this time.
The sturgeon was an important food source for Native Americans of the Great Lakes. Lake sturgeon are the largest of North America's freshwater fish, at 4-6 ft in length, and have long lifespans - with females living up to 150 years old!
Full moon in August 2025
The August Full Moon in 2025 will rise on the 9th at 21:13 BST in the UK, and is the 8th full moon of the year.
Although the moon will appear full a few days before and following the full moon, the Full Moon occurs during its peak illumination - when the moon is up all night, from sunset to sunrise. The New Moon will follow 2 weeks later on August 23. Don't forget to keep a look out for the Perseids meteor shower, peaking on the 12-13th August.
Meaning of the August full moon
Across Europe and North America, the August Full moon represents the start of harvest.
In Europe, it is known as the Grain Moon or Lightning Moon after the frequent thunderstorms that light up our skies in summer. An ancient Celtic name is the Lynx Moon, after the majestic wild cat who once roamed our islands.
The Full Moon is an ideal time to connect with the natural world and explore its natural rhythms. At Babipur, we enjoy creating nature-inspired play scenes and crafts that reflect the lunar lifecycle.
How to celebrate the Full Moon with children

Are you looking for ways to connect with the seasons and the moon cycle? Our Babipur families share their everyday play inspiration and seasonal rhythms and rituals:
- Moon Gazing - Choose a clear night to stay up late and enjoy the night sky together. If you can, find a high spot away from light pollution for the best views. Look out for shooting stars!
- Full Moon Nature Table - Explore nocturnal wildlife with a night time nature table, from bats to hedgehogs, moths and owls. Add wooden animals who live in a night time world. The Wonderie Playcloth Moonlight Forest makes a beautiful backdrop.
- Moon Mindfulness - Download and print our free phenology wheel template and practice daily mindfulness. Fill it in as part of your daily mindfulness ritual, recording the moon phase, weather or nature you have noticed each day.
- Night Time Wonder - Create a restful bedtime atmosphere that welcomes the dark. Toverlux Magic Lamps are ideal for seasonal displays and bring a warm glow to your child's bedroom. We love the beautiful Waldorf-style silhouettes that can be changed to reflect the seasons.
Where's the best place to see the full moon?
For the best views, try to find somewhere free from light pollution, away from built-up areas. Check the forecast before heading out and don't forget to pack some extra layers and a Klean Kanteen with your favourite hot drink. Leave your phone in your pocket as bright screens will prevent your eyes from adjusting to the dark.
