PlanToys Wooden Balancing Cargo Game with 14 Blocks & Colour Die

The PlanToys Balancing Cargo is a wooden balance and stacking game with a rocking boat base, 14 colourful wooden cargo blocks and a colour die. Stack and arrange the different-sized blocks onto the rocking base without tipping the cargo over, experimenting with balance, weight distribution and position as you play.

There are several ways to play, which is what makes this much more than a one-rule balancing game. Children can start simply by stacking the wooden cargo onto the rocking boat and discovering for themselves what makes it tilt, what keeps it steady and how high they can build. Add the colour die when they are ready for an extra challenge: roll a colour, choose a corresponding block and work out where to place it without sending the cargo tumbling.

The different sizes and shapes of the wooden blocks invite plenty of trial and error, prediction and problem solving. Moving one piece a little further to one side can change the whole balance of the boat, giving children a very hands-on introduction to cause and effect, weight distribution, balance and spatial awareness. It is a lovely early STEM and maths toy, with children experimenting and adjusting their ideas as they go rather than being shown a single correct solution.

Played independently, Balancing Cargo encourages concentration, planning, grip control, hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. Played together, the colour die turns it into a simple social game too, bringing in turn-taking, communication and strategy as players decide where their next piece might safely go. The cargo blocks are also useful away from the game. Stack them on a flat surface, sort them by colour or size, build small structures or add them to other wooden blocks and open-ended play.
