PlanToys Sorting Boat Wooden Montessori Shape Sorter 12m+

The PlanToys Sorting Boat is a wooden shape sorting, matching and sequencing toy for babies and toddlers from 12 months, with a boat-shaped base and six colourful geometric blocks. Children first match the three solid shapes to the corresponding openings in the boat, then find the matching hollow shapes to fit over them, adding a clever second stage to the sorting play.

It is a lovely twist on a traditional wooden shape sorter. Rather than simply finding the right hole, children begin to notice relationships between shape, size, colour and form, matching triangle with triangle, cylinder with cylinder and cube with square form. The step-by-step sequence encourages them to work out what comes next, with immediate feedback when a piece does or does not fit. PlanToys specifically designed the Sorting Boat to support classification, order recognition, self-correction and an understanding of how objects relate to one another.

The set includes three solid blocks, an orange triangle, green cylinder and blue cube, together with three corresponding hollow blocks in red, yellow and light blue. Little hands can grasp, rotate, position and compare the pieces as they work out where each one belongs, supporting hand-eye coordination, fine motor control, visual discrimination and spatial awareness.

There is plenty of early mathematical thinking within the play too. Sorting and matching help children begin to recognise similarities and differences, while putting the pieces together in sequence introduces ideas around classification, order, geometry and relationships between objects. Trial and error brings in problem solving and cause and effect without turning the activity into something that needs to be taught.
