Mercurius Waxed Kite Paper - 100 Sheets | Waldorf Window Star Paper

Mercurius kite paper is a translucent waxed craft paper traditionally used for kite making and now widely used for Waldorf window stars, lanterns and colourful window decorations. Often called glassen paper, this strong, smooth paper holds crisp folds beautifully while still allowing light to shine through the colours.

Because the paper is slightly firmer than tissue paper, it folds cleanly and keeps its shape, making it ideal for geometric folded designs such as traditional Waldorf window stars.

When placed in a window, the translucent colours glow softly in natural light. Layering several pieces together creates a stained-glass effect that changes throughout the day as the light shifts.

Kite Paper is Ideal Paper for Waldorf Window Stars
Kite paper has long been used in Waldorf and Steiner-inspired crafts for creating seasonal window decorations. The firm structure allows precise folding, which is essential for the layered geometric patterns used in traditional window stars.

By folding several identical pieces and overlapping them, intricate star shapes can be created. The overlapping colours blend beautifully, producing luminous designs that glow when sunlight shines through them.

Stronger Than Tissue Paper
Unlike delicate tissue paper, kite paper has a slightly waxed surface and a stronger structure. This makes it easier to fold accurately without tearing, while still retaining the translucent quality needed for glowing window decorations. The smooth surface also gives the finished stars and decorations a crisp, polished appearance.

Colour Range
Both the 16cm and 22cm sizes contain 100 sheets of kite paper in 12 colours; blue, brown, dark green, dark purple, yellow, golden yellow, light green, orange, purple, red, white.

How to Make Waldorf Window Stars with Kite Paper
Waldorf window stars are luminous decorations made by folding and layering colourful kite paper. When placed in a window, the overlapping colours glow softly in the light and create a beautiful stained-glass effect.

What you need

  • Mercurius kite paper squares
  • Glue stick or paper glue
  • Scissors (optional depending on design)

Basic method

  1. Fold the paper - Start with a square of kite paper and fold it diagonally, then again depending on the design.
  2. Create several folded pieces - Most window stars are made from eight identical folded pieces.
  3. Glue the pieces together - Apply a small amount of glue along the folded edges and overlap each piece to form the star.
  4. Press flat and allow to dry - Once all pieces are joined, gently flatten the star.
  5. Place in the window - Attach the finished star to a window so the light can shine through the colours.
