Refurbish, Don't Bin It!

Pre 1950ā€™s everything would have been fixable and repaired, often many times over to keep it in use for as long as possible. However, we now live in a world surrounded by cheap, convenient and throwaway products. Our planet's resources are finite, and we need to get creative in tackling our waste problem.

Thereā€™s a resurgence of interest in make do and mend, with people learning new skills to repair and upcycle clothing, fix appliances and getting stuck into DIY projects at home. The Right To Repair Movement is pushing for system change, requiring products to last longer and with repair designed in. In the meantime, taking care of our belongings and learning basic repair skills is a great place to start.

Keep a pack of FixIts in your toolbox for quick DIY repairs

What stops us repairing things? Well, usually time. But with FixIts, that repair that youā€™ve been putting off can be sorted in 5 minutes! These eco-plastic sticks become soft and pliable when dunked in hot water and can be moulded to any shape needed. As it cools down it hardens, making an incredibly strong and long-lasting repair. Once its hardened, you can drill, hammer, screw, sand or cut to size your repair if needed. Keep a pack in your toolbox ā€“ you won't want to be without it!

How To Use FixIts

As our short video shows, it couldnā€™t be easier to use FixIts!

FixIts sticks form a hard eco-plastic repair thatā€™s suitable for use on a whole range of plastic items. However, it's not a glue, so canā€™t be used on flexible rubber smooth glass or pottery. Re-use it, remould it, and if you donā€™t get it right first time itā€™s quick and easy to have another go.

  • Heat the FixIts stick in kettled boiled water (60 degrees C) for about a minute until it softens
  • Pinch off what you need and mould into the required shape
  • Leave to harden as it cools, around 5 minutes

TOP TIPS: Heating a moulded FixIts repair stick with a hairdryer will help keep it soft while you work on it. Different coloured sticks can be mixed giving a marbled effect to your repair. Use a ceramic cup to heat up your FixIts stick and a metal teaspoon to remove the mouldable blob, as it will tend to bond with plastics. Go for a smooth finish or a textured look, there's lots of ways to get creative for a unique mend.

As Seen On Dragons' Den

Will FixIts get the backing of a Dragon? Weā€™re looking forward to seeing how founder Chris Lefteri fairs against the fearsome investors on BBC One Dragonsā€™ Den. Deborah Meaden likes a good eco-investment, and I think they might just catch her eye. Good luck on Dragons' Den!
