Fairtrade Fortnight 21st February - 6th March 2022
Fairtrade is about giving fair prices, good working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for workers. Not through charity, but through the basic principle of fairness allowing farmers to earn a living free from exploitation and poverty. The global trading system is rigged but the Fairtrade Foundation provides a fairer system through social, economic and environmental standards.
CHOOSE THE WORLD YOU WANT
There are still many farmers and workers growing the food we eat every day who do not earn enough to feed their families, invest in their community or build resilience against health and climate shocks. Fairtrade Fortnight is the time when the movement comes together. Farmers, campaigners, supporters, shoppers, civil society, commercial partners and the Fairtrade Foundation work together to shine a light on the problems farmers still face, and how we can all be part of the solution by choosing Fairtrade. How does Fairtrade make a difference?
Fair Price: Farmers and workers receive a fair price for their produce or labour which helps combat poverty, strengthen their position and take more control over their lives.
Fairtrade Premium: On top of the fair price farmers and workers receive an extra sum of money to invest in improving the quality of their lives and those of the community. As an example, workers on Fairtrade certified plantations invested 32% of their Fairtrade premium into education service (19%) and housing improvements (13%)
Fair Standards: Fairtrade set certain standards that must be adhered by. They are a holistic blend of social, economic and environmental criteria. At the core for farmers this means protection of their rights and the environment.
Climate Justice: Without trade justice there will be no climate jusice. The climate crisis is the biggest threat to the livelihoods of millions of small-scale farmers and agricultural workers in low-income countries worldwide. Farmers need better incomes and financial support to adapt to changing weather patterns and change their farming methods to ensure a low-carbon economy.
The Fairtrade foundation is an independent, non-profit organisation that licenses the use of the FAIRTRADE mark on products in the UK that meet the internationally agreed fairtrade standards.
