Alex's Review of Wuka Period Pants and Hey Girls Period Pants

I absolutely love period pants, and they have been a huge gamechanger for me. Menstrual cups were my go-to piece of period kit for many years, and although I still love my menstrual cups, there are times when period pants are just much easier and more practical. I’ve built up a collection of absorbent and comfy period pants, and would recommend them to anyone who menstruates! As a plus size woman, it’s also fantastic to see so many companies in the industry making size inclusive period pants.

Travelling with Period Pants

I often find myself on the go, whether that’s travelling around by public transport for work, or on little family trips around the UK. Somehow, the universe always seems to line my period up to be on the days when I’m travelling, and when using a menstrual cup, I have often struggled when on the go. While it’s not impossible to change a cup in a service station loo, it can certainly be tricky and there is scope for mess. Period pants take away the possibility of messy situations and they are just so easy! I’ve worn them on long car journeys, train journeys from Yorkshire to the South Coast, and on flights too – all without incident.

There have been times when I haven’t been able to get my period pants straight into a washing machine at the end of the day, so I’ve just kept them in a wetbag until I got home. I have quite a collection of wetbags from cloth nappy days with my twins, but they are perfect for used period kit, including period pants. They are quite literally designed to keep any odours and moisture inside the bag until you can get to a washing machine.

Absorbency

Hey Girls and Wuka have quickly become my favourite brands – I’ve tried some others but these have always come out on top for me. On the heaviest days of my period I tend to have a medium to heavy flow, and I can wear any pair of pants from my collection knowing that I don’t need to worry about leakages – they have super absorbency. When I was first trying them out, I actually popped a cloth sanitary towel in as well for a little extra protection – I know a couple of people with very heavy flows do this to get a little extra absorbency from their pants, but for me the pants are just fine by themselves.

Many years ago, a friend told me about period pants, but when I went to check them out, I was disappointed to find very limited sizes. As a plus size woman with a big bum, I often find items of clothing, and sometimes whole brands, are just completely inaccessible to me. When Babipur started stocking a range of period pants I was over the moon to see the range of styles and sizes on offer – the world of period pants has come a long way.

WUKA offer sizes up to a 6XL in a wide range of styles. It’s fantastic to see the pretty lacey options available in these sizes – many other brands only offer plus size options in very plain styles, if at all! Hey Girls size up to a 4XL but they are brilliantly stretchy. I have several pairs of Hey Girls Cherry Period pants and they are the comfiest pairs of underwear I own – sometimes I reach for them when I’m not on my period just because they’re so soft and lovely!
